What are the rituals of Umrah?
There are four rituals of Umrah: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, Halq and Tqasir. We will discuss them one by one according to the Quran or the Sunnah.
Step1 Ihram
The first step of Umrah is to wear ihram.
It is a state of purity, after the purification of the soul and mind, men or women prepare for Ihram.
Ihram rules for men
After physical, mental, and spiritual preparation of the soul and mind, the next essential step is to wear the Ihram. Men wear two pieces of unstitched sheets of white colour, one for the shoulders and the other for the waist.
Things to avoid
- Do not wear any stitched clothes under the Ihram.
- Wear shoes that should not cover the top of the foot.
- Do not use scent after wearing the Ihram.
- Do not cover the head.
- Women can wear any simple cloths mad abaya, but must be modest and appropriate
- Women should not cover their hands and faces. Do not cut hair or nails after ihram.
In Quran
Whoever undertakes the pilgrimage in these months, let there be no indecency, no sin and no arguing during Hajj.
(Surah Al Baqarah).
Talbiyah
After wearing the Ihram, recite Talbiyah
Labbayaka Allahumma labbayk.
step2.Tawaf
It is the circumambulation around the Kaaba. It includes seven round start from black stone end at black stone. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad loved to perform tawaf with love and purity. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, used to recite ayat ul kursi, many surahs, and duas. We should also recite ayat ul kursi during tawaf for a greater reward.
In Quran
Indeed, the first House (of worship) established for mankind was that at Bakkah, blessed and a guidance for the worlds. (Surah Aal e Imran)
3:96.
Step3. Sa’i
This step of Umrah is of special importance for Muslims. In which Muslims complete seven rounds between the mountains of Safa and Marwah. This reminds the story of Hazrat Hajra (A.S) and teaches us patience. So Muslims perform Sai in remembrance of Hazrat Hajra (A.S).
Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj or Umrah, there is no blame on him to walk between them.
(Surah Al Baqrah) 2:158
Step4. Shave or trim the hair (Halq and Taqsir)
The is the last step is to shave or trim the hair.
Men can shave or trim their hair; however, women only trim their hair. It is the Sunnah of Muhammad (peace be upon him), so it is necessary to perform Halq and Tqasir after Umrah.
In hadith
O Allah, forgive those who shave their heads.
(Sahih al Bukhari) 1727.
